Currently, Mauritius is the only African country that offers digital nomad visas for those who work remotely and would like to live in this island paradise. This is an ideal option for remote workers to have a tropical island as their office when the Caribbean may not be right for them.


Mauritius has introduced a Premium Travel Visa which is valid for one year to welcome travelers seeking to prolong their experience of natural beauty and a balanced lifestyle in the country. As a result, a non-citizen is able to stay there for one year with an option to renew.

This means that you can request its extension with the Passport and Immigration Office for a further 3 months.

A Premium Visa also known as a Premium Visa is just for anyone who prefers to live in Mauritius for up to 12 months. If you intend to stay in Mauritius for 180 days or less, you are going to be granted a Tourist.


Foreign credit or debit cards would not be charged tax if used there. If you spend more than 183 days in Mauritius, you become a tax resident, therefore, you are going to be charged local taxes. If you are a U.S citizen, you will have to pay taxes in the US in addition to the taxes paid locally.

You can also bring your dependents to the country but you need to have additional funds to be able to support them.

How to Apply for the Digital Nomad Visa for Mauritius

The process is quite simple that you can make online or when you have arrived in the country.

Documents Required for Applying

Valid Passport should be valid for the whole year as your stay.

Copy of Air Ticket including the air ticket to Mauritius and a reserved return ticket.

Passport-size photo.

Pre-booked Accommodation for Quarantine and after the quarantine period.

Travel and Health insurance during your stay covering Covid Insurance as well

Proof of Income such as an employment contract indicating salary, a bank statement, or Bank Attestation meeting cost of stay which is at least USD 1500 monthly income, and an additional USD 500 per month for each dependent below 24 years old.

A certificate of a negative COVID-19 PCR test was administered between 5 and 7 days before the date of boarding.

Additional Documents For Dependents:

A marriage certificate is required for your spouse.

Letter Certifying Parental Consent if a dependent is a child and only one parent is with them

It must be noted that all the documents should be in English or France. Other ones in a foreign language must be accompanied by a certified translation in English or French language. Also, pre-booking for Quarantine accommodation is made before the date of travel.
