USA Digital Nomad Visa Overview
A US digital nomad visa is not available yet, sadly. However, there are other options perfect for remote workers who wish to experience the American dream.
The United States of America has a lot to offer for all types of visitors. From big cities to small towns and stunning landscapes…there’s something for everyone. For years, the country has attracted plenty of digital nomads.
Even though there isn’t a specific digital nomad visa available, there are other options. In this article, we’ll explain every US remote visa option so you can choose the one that best works for you.
Types Of USA Digital Nomad Visas Options
Here are the visa options that best work for digital nomads and remote workers:
Tourism and Visit Visa
These visas are extended for non-residents who wish to stay in the US temporarily. They’re known as B-Visas and there are two categories: B-1 for business and B-2 for tourism.
The B-2 visa is the most accessible for digital nomads. You’re not allowed to work for a USA company while visiting the country under this visa.
This B-2 Tourism visa is valid for the following circumstances:
- Tourism, holidays, visiting friends or relatives, or participating in a social event hosted by fraternal or social service organizations.
- Medical treatments.
- Participating in a contest or even related to music, sports, or similar kind, for which you are not being paid.
- Enrolling in a short recreational/educational course that does not count towards a degree or give you credits.
The visa is valid for up to 10 years. However, you can only stay in the country for a limited time. The US Customs and Border Protection will grant you the stay length upon arrival (with a maximum of 6 months).
Visa Waiver Program
Another option for digital nomads is the Visa Waiver Program, which allows most citizens from specific countries to travel to the US for tourism or business purposes for a total of 90 days or less without obtaining a visa.

You must have an e-passport (ESTA – Electronic System for Travel Authorization) that is machine-readable and contains a chip with the passport holder’s information.
H-1B Visa
The H-1B visa allows U.S. employers to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations. A specialty occupation requires the application of specialized knowledge and a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent of work experience.
This is basically a work visa that will let you legally work for a US company. It is valid for 3 years and extendable to 6 years. However, laws limit the number of H-1B visas that are issued each year.
What USA Visa Type Is The Best For Digital Nomads?
The best type of visa for digital nomads wishing to live in the US is the Tourism B-2 Visa. It is available in most countries, and it grants you a maximum of 6 months to stay in the country.
Who Can Apply for the Digital Nomad Visa Options for the USA
Any citizen of a foreign country who wishes to enter the United States can apply for a tourism B-2 visa.

If You Are An EU Citizen
Most EU citizens can travel to the US without a visa thanks to the Visa Waiver Program. The only exceptions are Bulgaria, Romania, and Cyprus.
If You Are A Citizen of Canada
Canadian citizens do not need a visa to enter the US.
If You Are A Citizen of Australia or New Zealand
Australian and New Zealand citizens can enter the US without a visa, thanks to the Visa Waiver Program.
USA Visa Requirements
Since the B-2 Visa is a tourist visa, the requirements aren’t as strict as other digital nomad visas. However, when you’re applying for a tourism visa, you must submit specific documentation and attend an interview.
Here’s a list of all the documents you’ll need to apply for the visa:
- A valid passport (valid for at least six months beyond your period of stay in the United States)
- Non-immigrant Visa Application, Form DS-160 confirmation page.
- Application fee payment receipt
- Photo
USA Bank Account Requirements
You can open a US bank account during your visit. You can’t do this application online and must wait until you’re in the country.
All you’ll need is two forms of identification (Passport and country ID or License). You’ll also need to sign a W-8Ben form.
Proof of Financial Self-Sufficiency
The B-2 Visa does not require a minimum income or show proof of financial self-sufficiency. You might be asked upon entering the country how much money you have on you. Just make sure to have enough to support yourself during your visit.
Proof Of Accommodation
This visa does not require proof of accommodation. However, you will be asked where you’re staying upon entering the country. The US Customs and Border Protection personnel might request to see a booking confirmation or ask for an address.
Full Health Insurance
Proof of health insurance is not required at the time you’re applying for the visa. However, it is always a good idea to have insurance while you’re traveling.

Minimum Stay Requirement
There is no minimum stay requirement for either visa option.
The length of your stay with the B-2 Tourism visa will depend on the US Customs and Border Protection upon entry. They will stamp your passport with the time you’re allowed to stay. The maximum they can give you is 6 months.
If you enter without a visa, with the Visa Waiver Program, then the maximum you can stay is 90 days.
How to Apply for the US Tourist Visa – Step-By-Step Instructions
Step 1 – Acquire All The Necessary Documents
Before you start your application process, you’ll need to gather all the documents they ask for. Thankfully, there aren’t that many. All you’ll need is a valid passport, with a clear copy of it.
You’ll also need a photo, in color size (22 mm and 35 mm). You can check all the photo requirements here!
Additional documentation may be requested, depending on your application. You might have to show:
- The purpose of your trip,
- Your intent to depart the United States after your trip, and/or
- Your ability to pay all costs of the trip.
Step 2 – Fill Out The Application Form
You must fill out an online non-immigrant visa application Form DS-160. You create a username and passport, fill out the application, and print it out.
Step 3 – Schedule an Interview
After filling out the application form, you can schedule an interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate of your country.
You may schedule your interview at another U.S. Embassy or Consulate, but be aware that it may be more difficult to qualify for a visa outside of the country where you live.
Step 4 – Attend Your Interview
Make sure to attend the interview at the time you scheduled it for. Be there on time and have all the documentation required.
In the interview, they’ll let you know if it has been approved or denied.
Step 5 – Wait For Your Visa
If the visa is approved, then you’ll leave your passport at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate of your interview. They will mail it back to you with your new visa.
Timeline for Applying for the USA Tourist Visa
The timeline of your application will vary depending on the U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Some applications 70 business days, while others may take up to 756. Make sure to apply with enough time because it is likely it will take a long time to receive your new visa.

The B-2 Tourism Visa costs $185. This is a non-refundable fee.
USA Tourist Visa Denial
Your visa may be denied if you do not meet the requirements, or if you fail to provide the complete documentation.
