About the team
We are looking for an Engineering Manager to join our Backend Platform team. This team is responsible for enabling the Engineering organization to concentrate on building features without having to worry about the “glue”. By defining standards and baking them into all aspects of the organization, we level up developers and provide a delightful environment upon which features are most efficiently built. This team supports our developers through libraries, tools, best practices, and training.
 
Our systems are built as a collection of containerized microservices, deployed in the cloud, managed using infrastructure as code, and updated through a modern continuous deployment pipeline. You will be supporting Ruby on Rails, NodeJS (Typescript), Kotlin, and Python developers at Wealthsimple. We also are responsible for the tools and patterns used in our CI/CD Platform. We are working with existing teams to distill best practices, creating an excellent experience for new hires and teams, and enabling our developers to ship new features to over 2 million clients in their first month while keeping it simple.
 
This role has as much cultural influence as technical influence within our Engineering organization. We create tooling and frameworks for other teams to use and only add as much process as is necessary (and never more) to ensure services are resilient and reliable.



What we’re working on 🚀:
  • Creating and maintaining a suite of developer tools and internal libraries that empower all teams across Wealthsimple to build systems and services that best serve our clients.
  • Developing CI/CD pipelines and deployment tools that empower our developers to ship quickly with confidence.
  • Architecting and abstracting the “plumbing” across our supported languages to enable developers to focus on shipping delightful products and features.
  • Building delightful developer experiences that empower developers across Wealthsimple to develop, deploy, and maintain their services efficiently, safely, and consistently.
  • Building a culture of excellence by guiding teams through best practices and standards.



Scope & impact:
  • Directly manage the people and the projects of Wealthsimple’s Developer Tools team.
  • Actively contribute to architecture decisions and build software affecting large parts of the organization.
  • Define best practices and standards that affect multiple teams, and hold teams accountable to these standards.
  • Mentor engineers at all levels.
  • Be a leader for the team, increased individual and team performance, growing careers, and communicating in a way that effectively reaches audiences across the company.
  • Work with staff engineers to curate and evolve our company-wide technology and tools.



We’re looking for someone who:
  • Is a true leader and caring manager for the Backend Platform Engineering team.
  • Is able to clearly and effectively communicate, internally and externally, the organization’s vision and strategy and explain technical decisions.
  • Has experience building, evolving, and maintaining large, reliable, and scalable systems or participating in or alongside developer tooling teams or similar roles.
  • Is a mentor and who will have a large positive impact on morale and company culture.
  • Is an effective listener, consensus builder and effectively incorporates diverse ideas into a coherent vision.



Our tech stack:
  • We have a service-oriented architecture with 150+ services.
  • These services are a mixture of Ruby on Rails, Java/Kotlin, NodeJS.
  • Our front end user interfaces are written in React and React Native with TypeScript.
  • We run a containerized platform orchestrated by kubernetes on AWS and highly leverage technologies like Aurora, SQS, SNS, S3, Kafka and GraphQL.
