ABOUT KHAN ACADEMY

Khan Academy is a fast-paced nonprofit on a mission to provide free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. We reach millions of students every month and are growing rapidly. We’re building a library of world-class instructional and practice resources that empowers learners. Whether they’re studying matrices, mitosis, or multivariable calculus, we want to offer students the resources to realize that they can learn anything.

ABOUT KHAN ACADEMY INDIA

Khan Academy India aims to deliver a world-class user experience to learners in India that is locally relevant and are enabled by a strong on-the-ground team and operations. Our learning system is mastery-based, which allows students to master key concepts at a pace that’s right for them before moving on to more challenging content. From serving under 500,000 learners in 2016, we are now serving almost 4 million learners a month across our websites, apps, and youtube channels. These learners include both independent learners accessing us at home, and teacher-directed learners in schools.  Our focus is to reach the underserved by making our content accessible in local languages and by working with large public school systems. Khan Academy is already available in Assamese, Hindi, Hinglish, Kannada, Gujarati, Tamil, Marathi, and Punjabi.

ABOUT THE INDIA CONTENT  TEAM
Our content team in India includes content creators who make thousands of awesome videos, articles, and practice questions aligned with the Indian curriculum to help both teachers and students. We are actively working on content localization in other regional languages as well, which means the content we co-create reaches a wider number (both nationally and globally), thereby quintupling the impact.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for a Chemistry content creator to lead our efforts of creating syllabus-aligned videos and practice questions primarily aligned for Grades 11th-12th. This will be a freelance position where you will be given an initial onboarding on our content principles  and then you will be paid per video created and per question created.

In this role, you would:

  • Create videos and exercises for Khan Academy.
  • Continuously iterate and improve content based on feedback received.

ABOUT YOU:

You would be a great fit for the role if

  • You have a combined 4+ years of experience in teaching and creating educational content for Chemistry. Impeccable written communication skills are non-negotiable.
  • You are a quick learner
  • You have the ability to timebox effortlessly.  Our greatest strength is the ability to pace up whenever needed by timeboxing on content. This requires us to have the ‘shipping beats perfection’ mindset.
  • You don’t need to be managed: We lead with context, not control. We expect you to be proactive and ask clarifying questions, provide status updates, loop in your manager when things aren't going your way, etc.
  • You have an entrepreneurial mindset, including a high tolerance for ambiguity, a penchant for experimentation, and a bias toward action. You are willing to roll up your sleeves and help the team get work done as we grow.
  • You are passionate about education and strongly desire to change the world for the better.

PERKS AND BENEFITS

We may be a non-profit, but we reward our talented team like a for-profit.

  • Remote-friendly workplace; Flexible schedules
  • Fun virtual events

Task 1 - This task has TWO parts

Part 1: Submit TWO  multiple-choice questions

We strive to create a body of questions that allow us to accurately teach, assess, and represent a student’s knowledge state. For this task, you need to submit two multiple-choice questions, one for each topic stated below. If necessary, include descriptions or drawings of any diagrams or interactions that would be helpful.

Topics:

  • Topic 1: Cannizaro reaction
  • Topic 2: Henry’s law

A guide to writing the questions:

  • Your questions should be written for students in Grades 11-12.
  • Include a learning objective for each of the MCQs.
  • Each question should include a correct answer choice and three (or more) incorrect answer choices.
  • Each question should have step-wise hints that nudge the learner towards the right answer. This is similar to a classroom setting, where a good teacher gently nudges the student towards the right answer instead of directly providing it.
  • For each correct and incorrect answer choice, include a short explanation or rationale (no more than 400 characters) of why the choice is right or wrong
  • The tone should be conversational, with crisp sentences and correct grammar.
  • We are expecting you to design MCQs that address a common pain-point  for learners in these topics.
  • For more clarity, please go through some of the exercises on the Khan Academy page on Science. https://www.khanacademy.org/science/in-science-ncert

Part 2: SUBMIT TWO  VIDEOS  on any of the following topics. Pick any two out of the three below:

  • Topic 1: Explain bonding in coordination compounds using VB theory
  • Topic 2: Stability of Cyclic Compounds: Aromatic, Non-Aromatic, and Anti-Aromatic Systems
  • Topic 3: Determination of Molecular Mass: Osmotic Pressure vs Other Colligative Properties

A guide to creating both the  videos:

  • The videos should not last more than 12 minutes. Assume all the necessary prerequisites.
  • The tone should be conversational. Imagine you’re talking 1:1 to a student or a friend. The best conversations happen when the tone is natural. Just be yourself!
  • The videos should strive towards providing a deep understanding of the topic. Huge plus if you are able to build an intuition for the topic
  • We are NOT looking for a video with high production quality. Even if you have never made a video before, all you need is a camera. You can just point it at a piece of paper and start writing.
  • For more clarity, please go through some of the videos  on  the Khan Academy page on Science. https://www.khanacademy.org/science/in-science-ncert
